While Temple Style Karate has "Karate" in its name, it is
much more than Karate. Temple Style Karate teaches traditional
or ancient martial arts, which includes Karate in a non-commercial
environment.
Traditional martial arts styles can be categorized into either soft
or hard styles. Although each individual martial art has some elements
of both hard and soft techniques, the central principle of each martial
art defines whether it is labeled hard or soft.
Hard martial arts deal with linear, direct techniques where force
is met with force. A block in a hard style can be seen as an attack
on the opponent's kick or punch. Karate and Tae Kwon Do are all popular
and well-known examples of hard style martial arts.
Soft style martial arts seek to redirect force and upset balance.
The opponent's energy and attack angles are taken and manipulated
into elegantly upsetting the attacker's equilibrium. The end result
is an opponent whose own momentum is used against them in a throw
or trip or who is brought into compromising holds and chokes. Examples
of soft styles include Aikido, Kung Fu, Jiu-Jitsu, and Tai Chi.
Learning and understanding both soft and hard elements allows the
ability to be creative in a self-defense situation. Drawing
from various martial arts to create a tailored and flexible approach
to self-defense is the most effective method.
Temple Style Karate, as opposed to modern martial arts training,
combines elements from 8 different martial arts styles into a very
effective self-defense form. The understanding that adhering
to strict ritualistic elements of only one martial art is contrary
to practical self-defense and personal development.
Distilling each fighting style into its essence and then incorporating
them into the Temple Style Karate style is the philosophy that Grand
Master Chung and his family have developed over 5 generations of
teaching martial arts. This philosophy combined with fitness,
mental discipline, character development, and self-confidence building
provides a complete and well-balanced martial arts training.
Also fundamental to Temple Style Karate is how it is taught. As
in the ancient way, the Grand Master teaches ALL students, both advanced
and beginning; and not delegating teaching responsibilities to assistants
or other students. This way all students benefit directly from
the knowledge and experience of the Grand Master.
Temple Style Karate is able to provide this level of instruction
because the school is lead by Grand Master Chung. Grand Master
Chung is the 5th generation in the Chung family to teach martial
arts and has lived martial his entire life. This includes the
intense study of many different styles of martial arts and holding
apprenticeships in South Korea, China, and Japan.
